Mentor & Learning Coach

Please read this message from Dutsy

Dusty Sykes offers kind, gentle, and firm support in foundational skills, concepts and depth of understanding, as well as organization, and time management strategies for Middle School students, 5th graders and High School freshmen.  He coaches students in math, science and social studies. He specializes in helping students with learning disabilities develop executive function skills that are required for success in life and in school.

He works with students in their homes, at school or public libraries in Oakland, Piedmont and Berkeley.  He also sees students in his home office in the Redwood Heights neighborhood of Oakland.

Through discussions with a student’s team members—including the student, parents, teachers, specialists, and therapists—Dusty diagnoses a student’s needs and tailors specific strategies for teaching and learning. He goes beyond helping with homework and works towards mastery of background skills and knowledge.

Dusty measures success by cognitive results, development of grit and persistence, ability to initiate and sustain academic work, and increased student recognition of his or her own strengths and challenges.  His priority is to work hard with students—and have fun doing it.
